Contractor Maintenance Check List

Purpose and Scope

Paint Pots Pre-School & Nursery is committed to providing a safe environment for children, families, staff, visitors, contractors and maintenance personnel. Tools, machinery and maintenance equipment can present additional risks in an early years setting because young children may be curious, mobile and unable to recognise or understand hazards.

This policy sets out the arrangements for the safe use, storage and management of tools and equipment by maintenance staff, contractors, tradespeople and any other person undertaking maintenance, repair or improvement work within a Paint Pots setting.

Children's safety must always take priority over the completion or convenience of maintenance work.

This policy applies to hand and power tools, electrical equipment, ladders, decorating equipment, gardening tools, machinery and any other equipment that may present a risk to children.

General Safety Requirements

Anyone using tools or equipment within a Paint Pots setting must:

• Work safely and within their level of competence and, where required, training.
• Follow relevant legislation, manufacturer instructions, risk assessments and health and safety procedures.
• Keep all tools, equipment and materials under their direct control.
• Never leave tools, equipment, hazardous substances or materials unattended where children could access them.
• Keep the working area clean, tidy and appropriately separated from children.
• Report hazards, accidents, damage and near misses immediately to the Nursery Manager or person in charge.
• Stop work immediately if children's, staff or visitors' safety cannot be adequately maintained.

Where work presents significant risk, an appropriate risk assessment and method statement must be completed/provided before work begins.
