Parent and Carer Earring Consent Form

Our aim is to keep children safe while respecting their individual religious, cultural and family beliefs.

Jewellery and items worn by children can present a choking, strangulation, entrapment or injury risk, particularly during physical play, sleep, outdoor activities and when children are playing together.

Jewellery

• Children should not normally wear jewellery in the setting.
• Small items such as bracelets, necklaces, rings and dangling jewellery may be removed where they present a safety risk.
• Parents should be advised of any concerns and asked to remove unsuitable items.

Teething Beads and Necklaces

• Amber/teething necklaces, bracelets and similar items are ideally removed before a child attends the setting, due to the potential risks of choking, strangulation and injury from small beads.
• Staff will discuss the use of teething beads with parents, explain the risks and seek to agree the safest approach for the child.
• Where a parent is adamant that the item is helping their child and that removing it would cause significant distress, the setting will respect the parent's wishes wherever it is reasonably safe to do so. A risk assessment may be completed and appropriate measures agreed to minimise the risks.
• Teething beads and necklaces must always be removed during sleep and at any time when staff consider the risk to be unacceptable.
• Staff must remain vigilant and report any concerns to the setting manager and parents.

Earrings

• Earrings can present a risk of tearing, injury or becoming caught during play.
• Where parents choose for their child to wear earrings, only small, secure stud earrings may be worn.
