Fire drills must be carried out at least once per term at different intervals throughout the day and on different days of the week. If there are a lot of new starters, both staff and children, drills must be practiced more regularly.
In the event of a fire alarm:
- Raise the alarm with a bell, whistle or shout of **‘Fire, Fire, Fire in (**where the fire or smoke is)’
which must be made in a clear and calm manner.
- All staff are to collect the children under their care and evacuate the building through the nearest and safest fire exit. Staff are responsible for collecting the registers for their rooms.
- Agreed staff members are responsible for any medication or care plans for any child on long term medication i.e inhalers and epipens.
- The Manager/Deputy in charge should check toilets, play area, office for any children, staff members or visitors and if possible, closing all windows and doors on evacuation if safe to do so.
- Evacuate the building under the guidance of the manager in charge and go to the designated assembly point.
- No-one is to attempt to fight a fire and no-one is to enter the building until it is deemed safe to do so.
- The children will need to be kept calm and safe and if they are to be outside for a prolonged period, then alternative arrangements must be made for the children to evacuate to.
- Do not try to collect personal belongings on evacuating the building.
The Manager in Charge is responsible for:
- Picking up the staff register, emergency evacuation bag, visitor book and mobile
- Ensuring all children, staff and visitors are accounted for.
- The Manager/Deputy in charge may need to call 999 and will need to be the point of contact when the Fire Brigade arrive.
Emergency Evacuation – Point of Safety:
In the event of an emergency evacuation of the building, for reasons other than fire, our nominated point of safety is displayed on the fire evacuation display at each setting.
