POLICY INFORMATION

Purpose

Paint Pots welcomes students and volunteers as an important part of supporting children's learning and development. We recognise placements as a valuable opportunity to develop future early years professionals whilst also reflecting on and improving our own practice. The welfare of children is always our highest priority, and all students and volunteers are expected to uphold the high standards of professionalism expected throughout the organisation.

Scope

This policy applies to all students, volunteers, work experience placements and unpaid helpers working within any Paint Pots setting.

Recruitment and Suitability

Before commencing their placement, all students and volunteers will:

• Complete the appropriate recruitment process in line with Paint Pots' Safer Recruitment Policy.
• Attend an interview.
• Provide satisfactory references.
• Attend an induction covering safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, confidentiality, professional boundaries, emergency procedures and the nursery's policies and procedures.
• Be introduced to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and understand how to report safeguarding concerns.
• Read and sign to confirm they understand the setting's key policies, including the Staff Code of Conduct.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Checks

The level of DBS check required will be determined before the placement begins, based on the nature of the role and current statutory guidance.

Volunteers undertaking regulated activity will require an Enhanced DBS check, including a Children's Barred List check. Regulated activity includes volunteers who:

• Attend the setting once a week or more;
• Attend on four or more occasions within any 30-day period;
