Observing colleagues is a good learning experience for both the observer and the person being observed. The process is intended to support and develop our individual practice. We can all learn from each other. It is definitely not an opportunity to discourage or undermine one another’s self-esteem. For this reason, it is essential that both parties are very clear about their respective roles prior to any observation and that mutual agreement is reached about any outcomes, following discussion.
Principles
Who is included in the process?
All childcare practitioners including managers and deputies.
What is to be observed?
The focus for observations will be day to day practice / interaction with children, linked to the current nursery action items identified as priorities from the development plan, as agreed with the nursery manager. If the manager is being observed then the observations will focus on managerial practice if needed for CPD.
How often should observations take place?
Every practitioner should be observed once per term. Managers as and when required as a CPD target.
How are Peer observations organised?
The nursery manager is responsible for arranging the schedule of observations. Room Leaders are responsible for ensuring all staff in their area have chosen an observation partner; that staff are clear on how the process works and that targets are fed into supervisions and appraisals.
How long should an observation last?
The whole process, including feedback, should take a maximum of half an hour –
Agree focus for observation- 5 mins
Observation- 10 mins
Write up- 5 mins
Feedback / Agree Target - 10 mins
