This policy comes in line with the changes to the EYFS Safeguarding regulations Sept 2025 and requirements to ensure safer eating.
At Paint Pots, the health and safety of the children in our care is our highest priority. This policy outlines the procedures in place to prevent choking incidents and how to respond effectively should one occur.
Choking is a medical emergency that occurs when an object blocks the airway, preventing air from reaching the lungs.
Aims
- To minimise the risk of choking through preventative measures.
- To ensure all staff are trained to respond swiftly and appropriately during choking incidents.
- To provide clear guidance on the procedures to follow during and after a choking incident.
- For all staff including students, volunteers, and apprentices, to hold a current PFA certificate to count in staff-to-child ratios.
Prevention Measures
Food Safety
- Allergies and food intolerance will be recorded for each child as part of registration with us.
- Posters displaying pictures of the children, alongside their allergies are displayed in the kitchen and areas where food is served.
- Parents/ carers must inform the nursery of any special health requirements regarding food consumption.
- Ensure all food is suitably prepared and served, following guidelines from the Food Standards Agency.
- The Early Years Food Choking Hazards poster must be displayed in all areas where food is prepared and all staff to read and be aware of its content.
- Think about the size, shape and texture of food, food must be cut into narrow batons, avoid round shapes and firm foods.
- Consider cooking firm fruit and vegetables to soften them.
- Children must be seated upright whilst eating.
